The Kill Team 2024 Starter Set

by
published

Yesterday's announcement of the starter set for the new edition of Kill Team was a bit of a surprise. It's a big break from GW's tradition of making starter sets a cut-down version of the launch box. Instead of Bug Men and Paratroopers we're getting Space Marines and Plague Marines and instead of some plastic city terrain, we're getting MDF…

A Spearhead Victory

Last week I asked folk to wish me luck as I participated in my first tournament. It looked like it paid off as I walked away with a nice piece of glass.

Admittedly it was only a little tournament, but it was a fun day and my opponents were all great. I got to face off against some armies…

Slaves to Darkness Spearhead

Tomorrow's Spearhead tournament at my friendly local gaming store was the motivation I needed to crack on and finish painting my Slaves to Darkness Spearhead.

I like the look of the models, but the Knights have a lot of fiddly bits which took ages to deal with along with "fun" little gaps to try to get the brush in. The…

Can I use my proxy or conversion?

by
published

A frequent question that crops up in wargaming forums, particularly those for Warhammer 40,000, is the request for permission to use a conversion or proxy model. It's not a question that can often be definitively answered because the details of the game you are playing aren't up to random people on the Internet.

The person who can answer that question…

Sonic the LARP

When I do outdoorsy LARPs, they are generally with a group which uses laser tag for combat resolution. The games run the gauntlet from plot-heavy to "an excuse to have some laser tag combat". This is the story of one game I ran back in 2019.

A teddy bear peaks out from behind cover near a silver case. The image appears to be from CCTV as it is interlaced and has a date stamp, a time stamp and the text "CAMERA !" embedded in it along with a record icon in the top left

This was a combat-heavy and plot-light game about a group of mercenaries (the players)…

Battletech Bootcamp

I went along to the Battletech Bootcamp at the Bad Moon Cafe in London which was run by Strategos Level 3 yesterday.

While I was tempted to take along my freshly painted Inner Sphere Assault Lance, I ended up using some of the preconstructed lists that were provided on the event page. I was working on the basis that…

Battletech Inner Sphere Assault Lance

by

Last year I started dipping into Battletech after a friend started a new podcast on the subject.

It appealed because a typical game has a small model count (4 mechs make for a game that lasts two or three hours) and the models look great, but aren't coated in as much fiddly detail as Games Workshop adds. It's also a…

Painting Roundup (March 2022)

by

I hit a painting slump in February and managed to almost complete five zombies. So when March came around, I put them to the side and picked up some other projects as a pallet cleanser.

When Haggok, the Gutripper Boss, as announced as this years store anniversary model I wasn't really grabbed. However, since then I have discovered that I…

Painting Roundup (Jan 2022)

Towards the end of last year I painted up a couple of scenery pieces from Loot Studios, and then failed to take pictures of them before I packed up my lightbox to make room for Christmas. So, a little late, here they are.

I'm planning to run some D&D 4th edition at the end of the month and have…

Painting Roundup (Dec 2021)

December's painting time (which was in short supply as work hit a bit of crunch time) was mostly focused on a series of character models of the PCs (and one NPC) from Ray's long-running Legend's Walk campaign that furlough switched from being "half a dozen sessions a year at conventions" to a weekly online game that helped us get through…
